![]() The federal response is already assuming a familiar shape. Body cameras may have given us visual evidence of Nichols’s deathly beating, but were no deterrent. The crisis in Memphis is the latest lesson in how limited the most popular reforms are, including those that might have seemed like game-changers not so long ago. Memphis meanwhile, has a dedicated website proudly proclaiming that its police have implemented all of the “8 Can’t Wait” recommendations. The officers in that unit are now allegedly responsible for Nichols’s death. The result was a slate of reforms that neither meaningfully changed how cops operate nor provided an effective check on Memphis’s aggressive new crime-fighting measures, including the formation of the menacingly acronymed SCORPION unit. Abolitionists had since published a competing list, “ 8 to Abolition,” whose tenets would end up functioning more as a wedge issue for Republicans and a scapegoat for Democrats’ electoral failings than an option that cities were seriously weighing. But Memphis had already leapt on what were now the most politically palatable reforms on the table. This spiraling discord led Packnett Cunningham to resign from Campaign Zero and Sinyangwe to issue an apology, conceding that the organization had failed to meet the moment. “But I would like to see it with some more meat.” “I do applaud their efforts,” said Al Lewis of the Memphis Coalition of Concerned Citizens, back when the city council first started looking into “8 Can’t Wait” in 2020. Even less radical local activists seemed wary. McHarris co-authored a widely circulated Medium post that called for it to be retracted, itemizing all the ways its key proposals had been tried before and failed. In their view, Campaign Zero’s program was neither bold nor statistically sound enough to guide such a critical policy response. Radical proposals like defunding and abolishing the police were in wider circulation than ever before by then, and many activists wanted to harness that energy to secure bigger systemic overhauls. The rollout of “8 Can’t Wait” was greeted with the kind of furious movement backlash that had, until that point, been mostly relegated to backstage drama. Mckesson in particular was controversial among Black Lives Matter stalwarts: Despite his commitment to the cause, he had a knack for monopolizing media coverage and regularly disagreeing with other organizers (his early support for Hillary Clinton in 2016 was a big point of contention). The list was the brainchild of Campaign Zero, an anti-police-violence organization founded after Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson in 2014 and operated since 2020 by veteran activists DeRay Mckesson, Sam Sinyangwe, and Brittany Packnett Cunningham. Memphis was one of several cities with more modest ambitions that turned to “ 8 Can’t Wait,” a set of measures whose architects claimed could “decrease police violence by 72 percent” - stuff like banning chokeholds, mandating de-escalation before shooting people, and limiting when cops were allowed to open fire at moving vehicles. The most dramatic was Minneapolis’s since-abandoned proposal to disband its police department. And it happened in a city that had embraced the most widely touted police-reform measures on offer after Floyd’s death and the ensuing protests, revealing the limits of that agenda.įederal-reform talks may have stalled after that tumultuous summer, but some localities rushed to implement new policies aimed at curbing police violence. It also followed the worst year for police killings yet recorded: Cops killed 1,176 people in 2022. Whatever happens in Memphis or elsewhere these next few days, the Nichols case has provoked the most anxious official response to any act of police brutality since George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis in 2020. “You can get your point across, but we don’t need to tear up our city because we do have to live in them.” “I want each and every one of you to protest in peace,” she said at a vigil for her son on Thursday. Nichols’s mother, RowVaughn Wells, found herself drafted unceremoniously into the role of peacekeeper, which has become a familiar duty among parents whose kids have been slain by cops. Mulroy promptly charged the officers with second-degree murder. President Biden called for calm, Memphis police chief Cerelyn Davis proclaimed the attack a “ failing of basic humanity,” and Shelby County district attorney Steven J. The 29-year-old Black man was beaten by five Memphis cops in a display of violence so savage that officials spent the lead-up scrambling to head off the expected outcry. We now have access to video of Tyre Nichols’s alleged murder, which started with an assault on January 7, ended with his death on January 10, and was captured in police body-camera footage made public at 7 p.m.

These methods, which are founded on the same principle, are collectively called the (SPAC). In addition, the extended spatial autocorrelation method (ESPAC) has been developed, in which the geophones are freely arranged. The spatial autocorrelation method (SPAC) in the microtremor survey was proposed by Aki in 1957 and according to its array arrangement method, the original geophones are arranged in circles or nested triangles, as shown in Figure 1. Although the amplitude and shape of the microtremor signal changed over time and space, there is statistical stability within a range, which can be described by a stationary stochastic process in time and space. A schematic diagram of MSM is shown in Figure 1. It is caused by two types of sources: Natural noise, such as noise due to air pressure, wind speed, ocean wave, and tidal changes (signal frequency 1 Hz). This type of vibration phenomenon is extremely irregular in time and space. Microtremor signals are composed mainly of body waves (primary and secondary waves) and surface waves (Rayleigh and Love waves) and the energy of the surface wave is the main component (more than 70 %) of the total energy. ![]() The applicability of the system is evaluated using field data, according to which the integrated energy-efficient wireless sensor node is convenient and effective for MSM. Therefore, it provides substantial support for the effective data acquisition over long measurement durations in microtremor exploration processes. According to the results of a series of in situ tests and field measurements, the noise level of the system was 0.7 μ Hz with 0 dB attenuation and 220 mW power consumption of the system in the autonomous data acquisition mode. The data quality monitoring system solves the closed technical flaws between the acquisition systems and the control center via 4G wireless monitoring technologies. Dynamic frequency selection technology (DFS) and dynamic power management technology (DPM) are used to design an energy-efficient mode. ![]() A high-precision AD chip and noise matching technology are used to develop a low-noise design for the sensor node. In this study, we combined a 2 Hz moving coil geophone with advanced acquisition systems to develop a new integrated energy-efficient wireless sensor node for microtremor exploration. However, the existing microtremor exploration equipment has been unable to satisfy the requirements of the MSM, which suffers from low data accuracy, long measurement time, and blind acquisition. The microtremor survey method (MSM) has the potential to be an important geophysical method for identifying the strata velocity structure and detecting the buried fault structures. ![]() I wanna show you the results of the last daily Pokerstars Casino Races. Like real life, Snake often has to wait for the elevator after pressing the button. There are plenty of places to hide and experiment with as you make your way to the elevator. Once you’ve chosen an entrance, we reach another room with guards, trucks, cameras, and doors, but it’s more confined than outside. Kojima showing Snake using the binoculars in a stylish way encourages the player to scope out the situation before approaching methodically. Snake’s life-bar is quite small at this point (it grows after defeating bosses) and he dies quickly after being discovered. A guard on the right can see Snake’s footsteps in the snow, there are spotlights to avoid, trucks to hide under/in/grab important items from, rooms to investigate, cameras (“surveillance cameras?”) to avoid, and multiple exits to reach the next area. This outer area is an impressive section that sets the tone for the next few hours of gameplay. ![]() Kojima takes control momentarily to show Snake using the in-game binoculars, reveal the Hind-D (“Hind-D?”) and setup the next sandbox. Knocking a wall to draw their attention was another fun way to influence their behaviors in your favor.Īfter messing around in this section for a few minutes, Snake can then access the elevator and Kojima uses the ascension to reveal the title with further cinematic flair. Although the guard AI is easy to criticize now (and even then), seeing the guards react to sight and sound made them feel alive and greatly helped immersion. We also learn that a sneeze momentarily disrupts their vision. Their vision is quite limited, but they can also hear footsteps through a puddle and even see the wet footprints left after walking through said puddle. The guards patrol a simple grid and we learn how they can detect Snake. This reward informs the player that exploring is encouraged and often rewarded.ĭuring these opening moments, credits appear on the screen, further pushing the cinematic aspects. The player can also navigate down to the water, to discover extra items. Snake starts the game behind a large structure that does two things: It hides the player from detection and forces them to learn how to crawl underneath. Within a few minutes, you assume control of Snake in a fantastic sandbox tutorial room. The briefing scenes display wonderful sweeping cinematography as Kojima shows you can do so much more with a video game camera than previously seen. This highlights and explains the one-man operation and hi-tech environment while hinting at later story reveals. It’s long enough to hear the briefing and watch Snake approach Shadow Moses from the water. The franchise is often criticized for bloated cutscenes but the intro to MGS 1 hits the sweet spot. This portion of the review will analyze the rest of the game and include spoilers. It’s a knockout package of gameplay, sound, and visuals. This is slathered in stunning ambience and atmosphere. MGS 1 delivers fantastic stealth action, a solid spy thriller plot that mostly holds it together, and several outstanding moments you’ll remember forever. Integral runs at 720p for a far better looking experience, and even features a slightly wonky first-person mode! exe file that easily ran on my modern machine. The PS1 version looks a bit muddy nowadays but there’s a fantastic PC version Metal Gear Solid Integral that a kind soul has packaged into a dead-simple. The controls will be different than a modern gamer is used to but work very well within the context. While the total package of the PS2 games may be better, MSG 1’s ambience, boss battles, and unique moments are some of the greatest pieces of the entire franchise. Metal Gear Solid is absolutely worth going back to and I consider it one of the three best in the franchise, going toe-to-toe with MGS 2 and 3 both released on the much more powerful PS2. After recently completing MGS 2and 3 also for the first time, I wondered how MGS 1 would compare with its sequels and its own nostalgic legacy built up in my warm and fuzzy memories. It was a borrowed copy so I returned it and didn’t complete it again. The atmosphere was like nothing I’d ever seen and once the credits rolled, I simply put the controller down in amazement. I was 14 when MGS hit and will never forget playing and finishing it the first time. A talented voice cast elevated inconsistent dialogue while Kojima’s direction proved how important cinematography could be in games. Computer games had already used the CD format to include voiced dialogue, but MGS set a new standard for voice acting and cinematic presentation. Metal Gear Solid was a monumental release for the original Playstation in 1998. ![]() In all likelihood, it could have lived for much longer. The 507-year-old quahog, named Ming, only met its end because it was frozen after its capture to allow researchers to properly determine its age. Buildup of these molecules can cause damage to DNA, RNA, and proteins and result in cell death.ĭue to the quahog’s attenuated amount of these reactive oxygen species, it is able to fight off a common source of aging and live for many centuries. The secret to this longevity is linked to the quahog’s unusually thin production of reactive oxygen species, which are unstable and oxygen-holding molecules (aka free radicals). This would put its original birthday sometime in 1499. Even more, those rings offer insight into its life-with wide rings showing a year of plentiful food and narrow rings showing a scarcer time.ĭue to this trait, one ocean quahog was dated to 507 years old-the oldest of its kind ever found. Like a tree, its life span is recorded in the growth rings of its shell. This marine bivalve mollusk is special because it is exceptionally easy to determine the creature’s age. Planarian worms and their stem cells are somehow able to avoid the aging process and to keep their cells dividing.ĭue to this cellular youth, flatworms defy aging, making it difficult to accurately measure a flatworm’s life span. ![]() This means that the stem cells are no longer able to divide and so become less able to replace exhausted specialized cells in the tissues of our bodies. Usually when stem cells divide-to heal wounds or during reproduction or for growth-they start to show signs of aging. Aziz Aboobaker of The University of Nottingham commented: But one cause of this remarkable feat may not have been mentioned in our high school classes.ĭr. Recently, a lab at MIT performed an experiment that regrew an entire flatworm from a single cell. Our school classes taught us about the special regenerative powers of the flatworms, unassuming creatures that harbor the ability to regrow into two healthy flatworms if cut in half. The biologists reported, “In a number of cases, such multicellular aggregates may result in a full reconstruction of an animal’s initial organization.” These amazing regenerative abilities render these creatures nearly ageless. The key to their longevity may lie in their simplicity.Īndrey Lavrov and Igor Kosevich, biologists who studied marine sponges’ abilities, found that when the sponges were subjected to tissue dissociation (by mechanically or chemically separating the cells from one another), the sponges were able to re-form into their original shape. Yet a marine sponge specimen has been found to be at least 11,000 years old, with some studies suggesting the potential life span of these creatures to be in the hundreds of thousands of years. They have no internal organs, digestive tracts, or nervous and muscular systems. They don’t possess the common elements that other animals (like us) have in abundance. Both TOBEC and TBW measurements are relatively easy methods of tracking qualitative changes in body composition within individuals, but TBW should be used when quantitative estimates of nonpolar lipid mass are desired. As far as multicellular animals go, marine sponges are as simple as they come. A sensitivity analysis suggests that, in most cases, TBW can be used to estimate nonpolar lipid mass within 15% of actual lipid mass. When total nonpolar lipid mass was greater than 0.1 g, the average percent error in predicted nonpolar lipid was 30% and 15% for the TOBEC and TBW methods, respectively. Estimates of nonpolar lipid mass, derived by subtracting predicted wet lean mass from total body mass, were highly correlated with actual nonpolar lipid mass. Regression models based on either TOBEC or TBW were able to predict dry lean mass and wet lean mass within 5% of actual values. I validated the use of total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC) and total body water (TBW) to estimate lean mass and nonpolar lipid mass in the lizard Sceloporus undulatus. However, most methods have proved to be either difficult or inaccurate for estimating lipid mass, particularly in small animals. Nondestructive methods of estimating body composition are crucial for measuring energy budgets of free-ranging animals. |
